What is a Network ?

A computer network can be described as a system of interconnected devices that can communicate using certain common standards (called protocols). These devices communicate to exchange resources (files and printers, for example) and services.

Here is an example of a network that consists of two computers connected to each other:

network of only two computers

In the previous example, both computers are connected directly using a cable. This small network can be used to exchange data between these two computers only.

What happens if we want to expand our network? Then we can use a network device, switch or hub to connect more than two computers:

a network with a center

All network devices can now communicate with each other.

We'll talk more about hubs and switches in a moment. For now, remember that these devices serve as the central point at which all computers are connected.
